Spaving Hurts Your Retirement Goals

Have you ever found yourself spending money to “save” money? There’s a word for that: *spaving*. It’s the sneaky habit of justifying purchases because of discounts, bulk deals, or buy-one-get-one sales. We’ve all spaved – I know I have!

On the surface, spaving feels smart. Who wouldn’t want to save while spending? But here’s the catch: if you’re buying things you don’t truly need, those savings might be costing you more than you realize.

Why Spaving Hurts Your Retirement Goals

Spaving is tricky because it feels like a win. The allure of saving money can overshadow the reality: you’re still spending it. Over time, small unnecessary purchases add up, chipping away at your budget and pulling you further from bigger goals—whether that’s building an emergency fund, paying off debt, or retiring early.

The danger isn’t just in the money spent. Spaving also creates clutter in your home and mind, distracting you from focusing on what truly matters.

Combat Spaving with Lean Thinking

One powerful way to avoid the spaving trap is by using a technique borrowed from the Toyota System called the “5 Whys.” Borrowed from lean management principles, it helps you dig deep into your motivations. Each time you consider a purchase, ask yourself:

1. Why am I buying this?
2. Why do I think it’s a good deal?
3. Why do I believe I need it?
4. Why is this purchase worth prioritizing over my financial goals?
5. Why would I regret not buying it?

By the time you’ve answered all five questions, you’ll often realize the purchase isn’t as necessary as it seemed.

Turn “Spaving” into Real Saving

Instead of falling for clever marketing, reframe how you think about saving. Each dollar you don’t spend on unnecessary items is a dollar that can work for your future. Imagine using that money to invest, pay down debt, or save for a dream-like retiring on your terms.

Before you hit “buy,” pause and ask: Does this purchase align with my values and long-term goals, or am I just reacting to the thrill of a deal?

A Mindset Shift That Lasts

The key to overcoming spaving is intentionality. Focus on what truly adds value to your life. Spending wisely isn’t about depriving yourself—it’s about creating space for the things that matter most.

When you prioritize your goals over fleeting bargains, you’ll find more peace in your finances and more progress toward the life you want. Whether it’s retiring early, traveling more, or simply reducing financial stress, breaking free from spaving helps you get there faster.

Your wallet will thank you. And so will your future self.
